A Portrait of Calm: Inside the Schaefer Residence by Darling Construction
At Darling Construction, we believe that luxury lies in the details—those seemingly small, thoughtful touches that work together to create something extraordinary. The Schaefer residence on John’s Island is a prime example. Recently featured in a stunning article by Vero Beach Magazine (March 2025 issue), this new construction project is a collaboration that celebrates calm, character, and craftsmanship.
The moment you step into the Schaefer home, you're enveloped in a quiet elegance that feels at once peaceful and inspired. But, like a Chuck Close portrait, the magic is in the details. Look closely, and you’ll find a symphony of textures, finishes, and refined nuances that tell a deeper story.
Working with interior designer Carolyn McNerney—who also happens to be the homeowners’ daughter—our team brought this thoughtfully designed vision to life. From the beginning, the goal was clear: to create a tranquil retreat that embraces natural light, water views, and organic textures while delivering modern performance and timeless appeal.
White oak floors, white shiplap ceilings, and a palette pulled straight from the landscape—muted blues, greens, and sandy neutrals—anchor the home in a soft, coastal calm. Yet it's anything but plain. From the mother-of-pearl fireplace surround to the zebra-accented dining chairs and cane-front cabinetry, every detail was chosen with care and purpose.
The home’s layout, too, was designed with intention. To maintain the integrity of the neighborhood while maximizing the lot's river view, the second floor was cleverly tucked into the roofline, allowing the house to read like a one-story from the street. Dark-framed glass NanaWalls provide an uninterrupted visual connection to the water, a must for the homeowners.
Collaboration was central to this project, especially between mother and daughter. Designer Carolyn McNerney balanced her parents' more traditional preferences with fresh, modern touches—pushing the envelope just enough to create something enduring and exciting. The result is a family retreat that not only suits the couple’s daily lifestyle, but also welcomes their growing extended family with comfort, durability, and grace.
From the custom U-shaped sectional in the TV den to the cabana guest room wrapped in whimsical wallpaper, every space in this 5,900-square-foot home is both intentional and inviting. It’s a project we’re incredibly proud of—one that showcases what’s possible when design, construction, and craftsmanship align in perfect harmony.
At Darling Construction, building beautiful homes isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are. And homes like this remind us why.
